I’m a self-taught ceramic artist working entirely by hand. I’m inspired by makers who work closely with their materials and by Japanese ceramic traditions and handbuilding techniques.

I work mainly with Tama-zukuri and Kurinuki, pinching, carving and hollowing out the clay. I leave the marks of my hands and tools visible, and I’m not interested in making perfectly uniform objects. My forms are tactile, often uneven and sometimes a little unruly.

Aimai has become an important part of how I think about my practice. To me, it is the space between what I intend to make and what actually emerges. Rather than trying to control every part of the process, I work in response to the clay and allow the material, my tools and the firing to influence the final piece.

I’m drawn to colours and surfaces found in nature, and I’m particularly interested in what happens in the kiln, where heat, flame, ash and atmosphere can leave traces I could never have planned.

Each piece is made slowly by my hands and carries its own character.
